Karkalla is a short walk from some of Hobart and indeed Tasmania's best dining. At the western end of the street is the busy Sandy Bay shopping strip, with a huge selection of cafes and restaurants of various cuisines. To the north is the history Battery Point with more fine end options and to the east is the Wrest Point Casino. By bike , car or public transport you can travel further afield.
On foot, we recommend
Breakfast, Brunch and sweet treats; Jackman and McCross is where art meets food and is a favorite morning activity to walk up 'billy goats lane' through the beautiful Battery Point and enjoy pastries in the sunny al fresco dining. In sandy Bay, Daci and Daci and Sisterhood are also divine
Lunch; There are two Greek take aways (Mykonas and Europa Greek Tavern) who also do excellent fish and chips to take down to the beach. for mexican we love the food and ethos of Zambrero, and there are several sushi and Japanese.
Dinner; Where to start?! Really, I suggest you use google reviews on this because there are so many and we recommend trying them all! However for a local easy walk Dr Syntax on Sandy Bay has cheap big pub meals
If you'd like to cook food at home, there are so many grocery stores to choose from within walking distance.
Sandy Bay has both a Woolworths, Coles, baker, butcher and whole foods market. However if you're up for a slightly longer walk or have a car we highly recommend Hill Street Grocer behind the University of Tasmania campus (Churchill Street). It is a destination in itself, stocked with local fresh Tasmanian produce (and often free samples!)
Sandy bay also has a post office, has hair dressers, massage, nail salons, beauty services, a bike shop and other general services.
You can't come to Hobart without visiting Salamanca Markets, on every Saturday from around 8am to 3pm. It's a huge market of Tasmanian goods and produce. Walking through it's a feast for the senses, with the smell of fresh baked pastries, coffee, timber wares, BBQs seafood. You can walk to the markets from Karkalla (often faster than it would take to find a parking spot!).
Sandy bay has a small selection of retail stores however we recommend Collins Street in Hobart CBD for a broader selection of shops and services.
